Some of the big issues that we've been working on are described below:

There are many other issues that are important too like:

  • Abuse & bullying
  • Education
  • Access to Justice (voting)
  • Accessible Information
  • Employment
  • Social Security
  • Housing
  • Transport
  • Capacity Building
  • Advocacy
  • Early Intervention

We try to have a say on these issues when we can. We also work with other organisations to support their work on these. But CID is a small organisation and is unable to work on all of these as much as we would like.

Health

MMN HFSThere are over 400,000 people with intellectual disability in Australia.

They have very high rates of health problems.

These problems are often not diagnosed or well treated.

NSW CID wants to make sure people with intellectual disability have the support they need to get healthy and stay healthy.

Mental health

MH HFSResearch shows that people with intellectual disability have very high rates of mental disorders but poor access to mental health care.

When there is access to care, the care is often not right for the person's needs.

NSW CID is working to make sure people get good mental health care when they need it.

Criminal justice

Research shows that there are many people with intellectual disability who get into trouble with the law. Many of these people are children.

NSW CID wants people with intellectual disability to not get into trouble with the law. But, if they do get in trouble with the law they get support they need.

NSW CID also wants to make sure the laws are fair.
